In 8 groups, 48, 28-week-old laying hens were given basal diets containing 8% soyabean oil (SO) or 8% fish oil (FO), or basal diets supplemented with 1.0% cholesterol (CH), 2.0% beta -sitosterol (ST) or a combination of both (CH + ST). Cholesterol supplementation caused significant increases in serum triglycerides, total cholesterol and low density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, whereas beta -sitosterol caused a significant decrease in serum lipids.
