Effects of herbivory and genotype on growth and survivorship of sand-dune willow (Salix cordata)

Effects of herbivory and genotype on growth and survivorship of sand-dune willow (Salix cordata)

The response of different clones of Salix cordata to herbivory by the specialist Altica subplicata was studied in 3 greenhouse experiments. Plants were caged and exposed to 3 treatments: no insects, low numbers of insects and high numbers of insects. Plants consistently had higher (1.5-6 times) growth rates in the absence of herbivory compared with the other treatments.
