Effects of salinomycin on forage digestion and forage protein degradation in the rumen of goats

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of salinomycin on the passage rate of feed through the digestive tract and its apparent digestibility, and on ruminal characteristics and the degradability of forage protein using three Tokara goats fistulated at the rumen. The feed offered to the goats was either a basal diet (B diet) composed of alfalfa hay cubes and concentrate (8:2 ratio) or a diet containing salinomycin (S diet) at the rate of 30 mg/kg DM. Alfalfa hay cubes and alfalfa hay were incubated in the rumen to measure their protein degradabilities using the nylon bag technique. The results obtained were as follows : By adding salinomycin (SL) to the diet, the outflow rate of the diet from the rumen slightly decreased and the passage rate through the lower digestive tract significantly decreased (P lt 0.01). The addition of SL increased (P lt 0.05) the apparent digestibilities of crude fiber, NDF and ADF, but depressed (P lt 0.05) the digestion of crude fat, and had no effect on the digestibilities of crude protein or NFE. The increase in fiber digestion was probably caused by its lower rate of passing through the digestive tract. When the goats were fed the S diet, the rumen pH and concentrations of total VFA and NH-3-N were not affected, but the molar proportions of acetate (C-2) and propionate (C-3) slightly increased with a small reduction in the ratio of C-2 to C-3. The number of rumen bacteria increased, but the protozoa population decreased when the S diet was fed. The protein degradabilities of alfalfa hay and alfalfa hay cubes in the rumen were lower when the goats were fed the S diet than when the B diet was fed. This decrease was probably caused by a reduction in protozoa population. There was, however, an inconsistent effect of SL on the effective degradability of crude protein (EDP) which was depressed in alfalfa hay but did not appear to be affected in alfalfa hay cubes. Dry matter disappearance of forage in the rumen showed patterns similar to those of protein degradabilities.
