Control of kala-azar (visceral leishmaniasis) in Bihar, India, is conducted with a programme of indoor spraying of DDT along with free treatment for patients. Observations on the impact of DDT spraying on phlebotomine sandflies, particularly Phlebotomus argentipes, are reported. 6 rounds of spraying reduced the number of vectors to very low levels compared with unsprayed areas. Female flies collected from sprayed areas and exposed to 4% DDT showed only 15.4% mortality.
