Evaluation of a group of early clones of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas Lin.) cultivated on a typical red ferrallitic soil in Guira de Melena, Havana, Cuba

In field trials in Guira de Melena, Cuba in 1992/93, 30-cm long stem cuttings of 8 early sweet potato cultivars were planted in rows 90 cm apart at a density of 44 400 plants/ha in red ferrallitic soil in Sep. and were harvested 120 d later. Plant mortality assessed after 10, 20 and 30 d was <5%. Forage yields ranged from 31.9 t in Cautillo to 53.2 t in INIVITB-90-7. Highest tuber yields were given by Vavilov-1C (26.8 t), Cautillo (28.7 t) and INIVITB-90-46 (33.8 t/ha).
