The rhizome of ginger was finely ground and eluted with n-hexane to remove the oil, then eluted with methanol to remove the dye. The dye amounted to 13.96% of the rhizome, was a lustrous, brown colour, with a m.p. of 88-90 degrees C, and was soluble in hydroxyl organic solvents. Chromatographic separation in chloroform:acetone (9:1 v/v) revealed one component of Rf 0.86, and lambda max at 420 nm.
