First isolation of Piscirickettsia salmonis from coho salmon, Oncorhynchus kisutch (Walbaum), and rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), during the freshwater stage of their life cycle

First isolation of Piscirickettsia salmonis from coho salmon, Oncorhynchus kisutch (Walbaum), and rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), during the freshwater stage of their life cycle

Journal of Fish Diseases 18(3): 277-279

P. salmonis was isolated for the first time from diseased fish during the freshwater stage of their cycle. The diseased fish, Atlantic salmon, rainbow trout, and coho salmon were obtained from freshwater farms in Chiloe Island, Chile during a natural outbreak of the disease in 1993. The bacteria were isolated from kidney tissue. Affected fish were also infected with Renibacterium salmoninarum which may have influenced the appearance of the disease.
