Abstract
In 1988, the Bureau of Agriculture and Food Policy in the Emilia Romagna region, Italy, supported an information system to maintain breeding technical extension services (AgriNet-ER). One of the aims was the creation of a regional database of milk-quality data for use in quality-related payments. Based on these data, time-series models for milk casein and fat contents were constructed for each of the plain, hill and mountain areas. The article contains the first evaluation of the forecasting ability of these models and of the implications for research.
