From farming systems research and extension to zonal strategies: rice research in Sukumaland, Tanzania

Recherches systeme en agriculture et developpement rural: Symposium international, Montpellier, France 21-25 novembre 1994 Communications: 86-91

Rice is grown in the Kwimba and Maswa districts, Tanzania, with diverted and trapped runoff. Three rice systems can be distinguished, based on local catena differences. Farming systems research and extension (FSR/E) focused on the system in which rice dominates all other enterprises. The results of a four-year programme and its approach are presented. Maintenance of soil fertility was a key problem. On-farm trials showed nitrogen to be the limiting factor.
