Genetic and phenotypic correlations of body weight, age at sexual maturity and some egg production traits in two local guinea fowl varieties

The effect of body weight and age at sexual maturity and the interrelationships between some egg production traits in the Nigerian Local Ash (Lavender) and Pearl guinea fowl varieties were studied. There was significant (P lt 0.05) variety effect on body weights at sexual maturity and at end of lay, age at peak production and egg production. The genetic and phenotypic correlations were low to medium and followed similar trends in the two varieties. Genetic correlations ranged from 0.24 to 0.66 while phenotypic correlations varied between 0.09 and 0.52. Mean ages at sexual maturity were 291:4 days (Ash) and 285.8 days (Pearl). Weight at sexual maturity was 1366.7 g for Ash and 1390.5 g (Pearl.). Most of the eggs were laid in the first six months and egg production in the first and second three months were strongly correlated with annual egg production.
