Genetic association of grain yield and its components in the dispersion and association crosses of durum wheat

The association of yield and its components was estimated in the dispersion and association crosses derived from the cross, Durum 24 times WH 821, in durum wheat. The pattern of association of yield components with yield remained unaltered at the phenotypic level in all the crosses studied. However an alteration at genetic level was observed. Grain weight was positively associated with tillers per plant and grain yield and negatively associated with grains per spike in dispersion as well as in association crosses. Grains per spike, however, had no additive genetic correlation with grain yield in the dispersion cross but, it had very high negative correlation in the association cross for days to heading and high positive additive genetic correlation in association cross for grain weight. Similar alterations in genetic association were observed between grain weight and grain yield in other dispersion and association crosses. These alterations were due to change in the linkage phases.
