The D2 statistic of Mahalanobis and canonic variables coupled with the grouping methods of Tocher and nearest neighbour were used to study divergence in 7 cotton cultivars grown at Vicosa, Brazil, in 1990. The 7 cultivars were divided into 4 groups. There was an apparent association between genetic divergence and geographic origin.
