Genetic variation of five silver fir (Abies alba) populations was investigated by assessing 15 isozyme loci. The mean observed and expected heterozygosities were 0.164 and 0.136, respectively, but no significant differences (p > 0.05) were found. Estimates of genetic multiplicity, genetic diversity and Nei's genetic distances were also calculated. F-statistics based on the 11 polymorphic loci indicated that 98.5% of total variation could be attributed to within population differences. The results supported the hypothesis of Larsen (1986) that central European populations of silver fir were derived from a small refugium located in central Italy after the last glacial period.
