Insect pollination in carrot seed crop

Insect pollination in carrot seed crop

Seed Research 1993; 20(1): 37-40

Insect pollination of a carrot seed crop was studied at Karnal for 2 years. The majority (90% of observations) of the pollinators were Diptera, of which sepsid flies was the most numerous (65% of total observations). Pollinator activity was greatest at 10.00 h and was closely related to temperature and humidity. Seed yield was 25-33% higher in open-pollinated plants than in caged plants from which insects were excluded.
