Insecticidal potency of red pepper (Capsicum annuum) on pulse beetle (Callosobruchus maculatus) infesting cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) seeds during storage

In laboratory studies, the insecticidal properties of Capsicum annuum were tested against Callosobruchus maculatus infesting cowpeas. The Capsicum fruits were either ground, sliced or left whole and mixed with 4 kg of cowpea seeds to which 100 live bruchids had been added. Insect mortality was determined after 6 months of storage. The highest mortality (92%) was recorded with ground C. annuum, followed by sliced fruit (79%) and whole fruit (7%).
