In on-farm field experiments on sandy loam soils in the Hoshiarpur district and clay loam soils of Kapurthala district of Indian Punjab, rice cv. PR 106 grain yield in 1990/91 was highest with 180 kg N + 45 kg P2O5 + 45 kg K2O/ha (150% of the recommended NPK fertilizer), or dhaincha [Sesbania aculeata] green manure + 100% of the recommended NPK fertilizer. Wheat cv. HD 2329 was grown on the same plots with recommended NPK (120 kg N + 60 kg P2O5 + 30 kg K2O/ha) in all treatments. Yield at Hoshiarpur was highest after rice 6 t FYM/ha + 100% of recommended NPK while yield at Kapurtha was highest after rice given the green manure + 100% of recommended NPK fertilizer. In 1991/92, yield of both crops was higher when 150 kg N + 40 kg P2O5 was applied to rice than from treatments with 60 kg N + FYM or green manure or lower N + P rates.
