In medium and low fertility soils the optimum N application rate for the quality rice Gengxian 89, Qishanzhan, Qihuangzhan No.2 and Qisizhan was 8-10 kg/mu during the early season and 10-13 kg/mu during the late season. The fertilizer requirements and physiological characteristics of these cultivars were similar to the more common rice cultivars. At the present time, the main reason for low yields of quality rice is a low 1000-grain weight and a poor response to fertilizer application.
