Integrated weed management in sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum)

In field trials conducted at the Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Coimbatore, during 1990-92, the effects were evaluated of the following treatments for the control weeds throughout the growing season of the crop in sugarcane Co 8021: conventional practises of hoeing and hand weeding 45, 60 and 90 d after planting (DAP); pre-em. atrazine at 1 kg/ha + post-em. (60 DAP) 2,4-D at 1 kg; hoeing and hand weeding 45 DAP + trash mulching (3.5 tonnes/ha) 90 DAP; pre-em. atrazine at 1.0 kg or metribuzin at 1.0 kg + trash mulching at 90 DAP; pre-em. atrazine at 2.0 kg or metribuzin at 1.0 kg + hoeing and hand weeding 60 DAP; and pre-em. tebuthiuron at 1.0-2.0 kg. Atrazine + hoeing and hand weeding resulted in lowest weed DM at 120 DAP of 93 kg/ha, followed by metribuzin + trash mulching (137 kg), compared with the untreated control value of 2143 kg. Metribuzin + trash mulching and atrazine + trash mulching resulted in the greatest cane and sugar yields, resp., of 86.4 and 10.26 t/ha, resp., compared with untreated control values of 63.4 and 7.82 t, resp. Atrazine + trash mulching resulted in the greatest net returns (Rs 10 507/ha). None of the weed-control treatments affected the sugar quality significantly.
