The application of a low-frequency oscillating cut, moving the knife laterally, for softwood veneer peeling was investigated to improve veneer surface quality when using sugi (Cryptomeria japonica) and hinoki (Chamaecyparis obtusa) bolts. The effect of the knife oscillation on the veneer surface roughness was examined in relation to the moisture content, annual ring angles, tracheid diameters, and cell wall thickness at different bar openings.
