Male fertility restoration and attributes of the A4 cytoplasmic-nuclear male sterile system for grain production in pearl millet

Nine dwarf lines, originally under development as seed parents for the A1 system, were identified as restorers of the A4 system. These R4 restorer lines were intermated 3 times and released as population NPM3. Topcrosses on 6 seed parents (2 isogenic pairs in A1 and A4 cytoplasms and 2 unrelated A1 and A4 seed parents) confirmed that NPM3 restored male fertility in 93-97% of the plants in the A4 and 7-16% in the A1 test crosses.
