Methods and results of breeding a fennel variety (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) for annual cultivation

Methods and results of breeding a fennel variety (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) for annual cultivation

Acta Horticulturae ( 330): 185-189

Lowering of the manpower expenditure in fennel growing can be achieved by sowing early-maturing varieties directly into the ground instead of planting plantlets. The breeding of such varieties started with a screening of existing strains for early maturity, yield of 1 t/ha, large seeds, seed oil content of 6 ml/100 g, fenchone content of 12-24% in the oil and limited plant height.
