Morphological characters and inheritance of 'variegated-leaf' mutant in Petunia hybrida

An F1 hybrid of Violet x White produced a spontaneously mutated branch with white variegations on leaves. The mutant was propagated by root cuttings. Electron microscopy found that the white colour was caused by abnormal plastids. From selfing and backcrossing with normal white and violet varieties, the abnormal plastid was shown to be almost completely maternally inherited. Occasionally, normal plastids were observed in offspring where the mutant was the female parent.
