Nitrogen in the readily available soil-water of two arable soils

Nitrogen in the readily available soil-water of two arable soils

Agrarforschung 2(2): 45-48

Sampling with porous cups showed that a Gleysol mineralized less nitrogen and lost more N to groundwater than a better aerated Brown Earth. Much mineral N, available to plants, was present in the soil after a potato crop, but little after spring oats and leys. Cultivation accelerates N-mineralization, especially when manure or crop residues were simultaneously ploughed into the soil; this was also accelerated by rising soil temp.
