Old-growth forests of the central hardwood region

The central hardwood forest region of the eastern USA includes many small isolated woodlands that are classified as old growth. Collectively these remnant forests constitute less than 1% of the original forest land in the region. The small size and isolation of many of these woodlands create management problems for maintaining their long-term viability.
