Studies were made in 1991-94 in plots in Scots pine [Pinus sylvestris] stands (about 30 yr old) 50-2700 m to the east of a pig fattening station near Eberswalde, Germany, which ceased operation in 1991. In summer 1993, there was no indication of damage by ammonia fumes; the highest daily NH3 concentration (near an open pool of liquid manure) was 2.79 mu g/msuperscript 3 air, a value 130 times lower than in summer 1991. However, in some stands in the immediate vicinity of the former station, there was evidence of a persistent abnormally high nitrogen load, with high N content in humus, a low C/N ratio, and poor Mg supply. The composition of ground vegetation in plots near the former station reflected the soil nutrient status. In all stands, the herbaceous and grass flora consisted mainly of photophilic and thermophilic generalist species. The highest nitrogen content in Scots pine needles was found in the needle-class of 1991.
