Five Norway spruce (Picea abies) trees growing near Bad Windsheim, Middle Franconia (Germany) were sampled, and latewood was analysed, in a dendrochronological study. The delta D values of latewood were significantly correlated with both temperature and relative humidity for July and August - the period of latewood formation. This isotope pattern results from cellulose isotopic composition being determined mainly by the isotopic composition of precipitation used during (summer)-photosynthesis.
