Energy and nitrogen metabolism was measured in 23 litters of 10 or 11 sucking pigs based on 218 whole body analyses and 96 metabolic measurements in early-weaned pigs together with 134 body analyses. The measurements were part of a series of studies for the factorial derivation of energy requirements of sucking pigs and for milk yield of sows. Energy requirements for maintenance of sucking pigs and in early weaned pigs given cow milk substitute was 468 and 451 kJ/kg0.75 daily, respectively.
