The Ukraine sugar industry

, : The Ukraine sugar industry. Czarnikow Sugar Review ( 1861): 130-132

The current state of the industry is surveyed. The total area under beet is ~20% less than 7-8 years ago, and the outputs of many factories have dropped by 40-50%, partly because delays in harvesting and transport have increased the incidence of frozen beet and high soil tare. Increasingly, both farmers and factories are being paid with sugar produced rather than in currency, so less sugar remains for disposal by the authorities.
