The association of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam) with common vetch (Vicia sativa L.) for winter forage production

In field trials in Chapingo, Mexico in 1985-86, L. multiflorum and V. sativa were broadcast on ploughed and harrowed land in early Nov. at rates of 30 and 90 kg seed/ha, respectively, in pure stands or in 80:20, 60:40, 40:60 or 20:80% grass:legume mixtures. Swards were grown without fertilizer but irrigated to field capacity at sowing and subsequently at 15- to 20-d intervals and cut 125, 160 and 200 d after sowing.
