In field trials in the 1986-87 wet seasons at Samaru, Nigeria, cowpeas Kano 1696, SVu48, 176B and 339-1 were given 0, 18.5, 37 or 55.5 kg P2O5/ha as diammonium phosphate or single superphosphate. Kano 1696, a long-season cultivar, failed to produce marketable yields, while SVu48 gave higher yields than the other 2 cultivars. Crop growth and yield increased significantly with increasing P rate up to 37 kg P2O5/ha, which gave 54% higher seed yield than the control.
