The playing quality of natural turf hockey pitches



Journal of the Sports Turf Research Institute 70: 13-28



Thirty-one hockey pitches were tested to evaluate the spatial variation in playing quality, to compare mechanical and electronic measurements of playing quality with the players' perceptions and to formulate performance standards for hockey on natural turf. Visits were timed to examine pitch performance over a wide range of environmental conditions. The wings usually had the highest grass cover, were softer and gave better grip, but produced the lowest values of ball roll.
