The rise and fall of sport and physical education philosophy: a plea for a renewal of a normative approach in the physical education curriculum

This paper examines trends in sport and physical education in North America. It develops an understanding of the prevailing philosophies that have been held by physical educators through history in order to explain the present position in which competitive sport has assumed a position disproportionate to its value to society.
