Tree fruit nutrition II: soil pH and apple tree growth

Tree fruit nutrition II: soil pH and apple tree growth

Good Fruit Grower 46(5): 42-44

A fertilizer trial was conducted in an apple (cv. Delicious) orchard with 5- and 8-year-old trees using monoammonium phosphate (MAP), ammonium nitrate, calcium nitrate and a compound NPK fertilizer, applied each spring from 1985 to 1989 at 0.5, 1.0 or 1.5 lb N/tree. Soil pH was highest with calcium nitrate (6.57 and 6.68 with 0.5 and 1.0 lb/tree, respectively) and lowest with 1.5 lb ammonium nitrate/tree (4.22). Shoot growth increased with soil pH.
