Variability and inter-relationship of yield, growth and maturity characters in upland cotton

The maturity characters were more stable than growth characters as shown by their least value of CV. The range for seed cotton yield was relatively wide in case of population of parents. Sufficient variability for seed cotton yield at phenotypic and genotypic levels were present in all the three populations of parents, F-1's and F-2's, as shown by their PVC and GCV values. The high heritability estimates were noted for seed cotton yield in populations of parents and F-1's. Seed cotton yield showed nonsignificant correlation coefficients with growth and maturity characters in population of parents, while in population of F-2's, it showed strong positive associations with plant height and first fruiting node number and negative with Bartlett's earliness index.
