A conceptual framework for integrating natural resource management and research

A shift in paradigm from linear succession to a state-and-transition approach has, or is, occurring in range management and related professions. Combining state-and-transition models with the succession management approach is proposed. With such a system, the primary causes of succession, i.e. site availability, species availability, and species performance provide the explanations for transitions from one state (plant community) to another.
