114 (63%) animal clinics returned a questionnaire concerning their small animal anaesthesia practices. 51% of the practices used inhaled anaesthesia and only 28% had mechanical or technical equipment for monitoring general anaesthesia. alpha -2 agonists (medetomidine, xylazine and detomidine) were the main sedatives used, often in combination with opiates, mainly methadone. Routine postoperative pain control, mainly non-steroidal antiinflammatory agents, was used in 70% of the clinics.
