Bases for a food and nutrition policy
Changes which have occurred in Chile during the last 20 years in demographic and epidemiological conditions in relation to food intake and nutrition are described. Between 1965 and 1990 infant mortality decreased by 83% as a result of mother-infant feeding programmes. Present nutritional problems are similar to those in developed countries, obesity and hyperlipaemia, but despite these changes, stunting in children, some nutrient deficiencies and food shortages remain problems among the poor.
