Gibbs sampling in animal breeding can be carried out using 2 types of prior specification of parameters. The 1st specification has full conjugacy. The 2nd specification has non-conjugacy, which causes computational difficulties. It is shown how the Gibbs sampling procedure, making use of an adaptive rejection sampling algorithm, deals with non-conjugacy in a balanced 1-way classification model with random sire effects. Results with the 2 specifications are compared.
