Behavior and phenology of a specialist bee (Dieunomia) and sunflower (Helianthus) pollen availability
Possible factors involved in the ability of the solitary, oligolectic halictid bee Dieunomia triangulifera to maintain pollen specialization in the annual sunflower Helianthus annuus were investigated. There is close synchrony between the bee's activity patterns and the sunflower's pollen availability, and female reproductive success varies positively with the availability of the pollen. Conflicting evidence for resource limitation indicates that there is a physiological limit on the rate of egg production, thereby suggesting that resource limitation is not the primary factor that limits reproductive output. Females that are synchronized with the sunflower bloom effectively increase their own resource availability.
