Benzophenanthridine alkaloids of Chelidonium majus; I. Inhibition of 5- and 12-lipoxygenase by a non-redox mechanism
C. majus is used in traditional medicine for its antiinflammatory properties. The benzophenanthridine alkaloids sanguinarine and chelerythrine (isolated from an extract of C. majus obtained from a commercial source) inhibited the activity of 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO) from polymorphonuclear leukocytes and 12-LO from mouse epidermis; the activity of soybean LO was not influenced. The extract also inhibited the activity of 5-LO. Chelidonine, which cannot form pseudobases, was inactive against LOs.
