Basal high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol of rabbits, and their serum cholesterol response to a high-cholesterol diet, were measured in crosses between hyper-responding and hypo-responding inbred strains. It was shown that 30% of the individual variation in serum cholesterol response is under genetic control, and that 10-16 loci may be involved. The hsuperscript 2 of the basal HDL cholesterol concentration was 0.50-0.80.
