Changes in the traditional Louisiana sugarcane harvest system: replacing soldier harvesters with 'cut-crop' combine harvesters

Since the 1950s the whole Louisiana sugarcane crop has been harvested mechanically, typically by soldier harvesters and grab loaders, at low cost (currently 2.25-3.00 US$/ton); cut-chop combines were not used commercially until 1992, partly because the short growing season leads to an average crop of only 60 tons/ha. Six tests comparing combine harvesters with the traditional system were performed in 1992-95.
