Characterization of Staphylococcus aureus from rats in a fish market and a slaughterhouse

Characterization of Staphylococcus aureus from rats in a fish market and a slaughterhouse

Journal of the Japan Veterinary Medical Association 49(6): 408-410

S. aureus was isolated from 44 (74.6%) of 59 rats (Rattus norvegicus) from a fish market in Chiba Prefecture, Japan and from 9 (34.6%) of 26 rats at a abattoir in Kanagawa Prefecture. Of 104 isolates from the fish market, the most frequent was biotype C (81 strains, 77.9%), followed by biotype B (16 strains, 15.4%), biotype A (6 strains, 5.8%) and one untypable strain (1.0%). Eight (88.9%) of 9 isolates from the abattoir were of biotype G and 1 (11.1%) was of biotype B.
