Characterization of Vertisols from irrigation projects in the low-medium Sao Francisco river valley : I. Mineralogy and micromorphology

Seven soil profiles were studied, two from irrigated plots, the remainder from non-irrigated plots at project sites in Bahia, Brazil. The clay mineralogy was dominated by interstratified swelling minerals, also having kaolinite, goethite, felspar and quartz. Moderately developed insepic fabric was observed at three non-irrigated sites, suggesting that swelling and shrinkage was less pronounced than in other Vertisols showing well developed massepic fabric.
