Characterization of bacteria that cause bacterial shoot blight of pear in Japan

A bacterial strain from an outbreak of bacterial shoot blight in the 1970s in Japan was studied and identified. Using bacteriological tests, carbon source utilization and hybridization of genomic DNA it was concluded that the bacterial shoot blight was caused by Erwinia amylovora. A number of strains of the pathogen were compared and found to have properties in common. However, isolates did fall into distinct groups.
