Characterization of humic substances using fourier transform infrared spectroscopy



Humic substances in the global environment and implications on human health: proceedings of the 6th International Meeting of the International Humic Substances Society, Monopoli Bari, Italy, September 20-25, 1992: 145-152



Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was used along with nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and wet chemical analyses to characterize the chemical properties of 13 humic substances collected from aquatic, soil and sediment sources. Diagnostic bands in the FTIR spectra of these humic substances were identified and compared to selected chemical and NMR properties.
