Characterization of rabies virus isolates from domestic animals from rabies endemic areas of Brazil

31 strains of rabies virus isolated from brains of domestic animals (dogs, cattle, horses, pigs) from rabies endemic areas were studied to determine their biological profile and immunological identity in comparison to the standard rabies virus strain. Incubation period in mice was 4-23 days (mean value 10.2); period of clinical disease was 1-5 days (mean 3.3); pathogenicity 96.5% (332 of 344 mice died). The characteristic symptoms of rabies were exhibited.
