Curie-point pyrolysis-gas chromatography (Py-GC) gave rapid and reproducible characterization of soil organic matter and cluster analysis classified adequately the resulting pyrograms. When Py-GC/MS was applied to humic acids extracted from 7 Japanese soil types the pyrograms were complicated because of the multitude of products peaks obtained.
