In a diallel set of crosses among six inbred lines, the general combining ability (gca) and specific combining ability (sca) were highly significant for yield and its contributing traits. The sca played preponderant role in the genetic control of grain yield. 1000-seed weight and number of tillers/plant. On the contrary additive gene effect were observed for days to 50% flowering and downy mildew incidence. Additive and non-additive gene effects seemed to be equally important for plant height, ear length and girth of the earhead. The inbred lines 1449 and IP 18293 were judged to be best general combiners for grain yield and downy mildew resistance.
