Comparative study of some flue-cured Virginia tobacco varieties at Swabi

Six flue-cured virginia (Nicotiana tabacum L.) varieties were evaluated for their growth, yield and other morphological characteristics at Swabi during the year 1987-88. The maximum cured leaf yield of 2487 kg/ha was obtained from the new promising variety NC-13, followed by NC-89 and Speight. G-28 with a cured leaf yield of 2286 and 2190 kg/ha respectively. Regarding leaf size and leaf number, variety NC-13 gave maximum leaf size of 3011.23 cm-2 and leaf number of 33 per plant. Different growth characteristics and yield potential of varieties under study may be attributed to their different genetic behavior.
